 Recycling Ideas for your home

By Real People at 27 Jun 2018, 10:26 AM

World Environment month is here, and not only is this worldwide commemoration a great time to acknowledge and support environmental programs and strategies, but also the perfect day to start or re-commit to earth-friendly practices in your home, office and life. While there are countless things you can do to “go green,” one of the easiest and most effective is to recycle.

We have heard so much about recycling and how important it is to do. We believe in it, but some days it feels more of an inconvenience then a joy to the earth.

But the thing is, recycling doesn’t have to be difficult or an inconvenience. Recycling doesn’t have to always be separating glass from plastics and having 4 different bins in our kitchen. Repurposing can be fun, can express the creativity you didn’t know you had, and is great way to get the kids involved.

Recycling helps to conserve natural resources, it reduces the need for landfill space, it helps to lessen pollution and greenhouse gas emissions and it saves the energy that is used to extract and process raw materials.

6 Recycling tips for your home

  • Turn chipped mugs and bowls into planter pots.
  • Sew clothing into quilted blankets that you can donate.
  • Use old wine bottles as candle holders or flower vases.
  • Wash out glass jars (coffee, gherkins, etc.) and use them for storage containers e.g. for stationery.
  • Start a worm farm, or compost bin in your garden for your fruit and veg cut-offs. As the food waste decays, it will gradually turn into soil that you can spread onto your garden.
  • Build an eco-brick from thousands of shopping packets and other non-recyclable plastics like sweet packaging. These eco-bricks can be donated to build schools in underprivileged areas.

We hope these tips have provided you with some thoughts on how easy it can be to make recycling a simple part of your daily routine. Share your recycling story with us on Facebook!
